American Airlines Reports a loss of $1.7 billion in 1Q

American Airlines loss of $1.7 billion in 1Q

American Airlines parent co. says it lost $1.66 billion in the first quarter, mostly on costs related to its bankruptcy restructuring.

Excluding bankruptcy costs and other special items, AMR lost $248 million, compared to a loss of $405 million a year ago.

American Airlines is the nation's No. 3 airline after United and Delta, boosted revenue by 9.1 percent, to $6.04 billion. Revenue for each mile that passengers fly, a closely watched number in the airline business, grew 10.3 percent, much faster than at Southwest Airlines.

AMR's average fares on American and the American Eagle rose 7.4 percent over a year ago.

Despite higher prices, American was able to fill 79 percent of its seats, up from 77.1 percent a year ago. The number of flights was virtually unchanged.

All airlinescontinue to limit the supply of seats to control costs and drive up fares.

AMR paid $3.24 per gallon for fuel, up from $2.76 per gallon in the first quarter of last year. Its fuel bill rose to $2.17 billion.

AMR has approximately 88,000 employees.

Please note: Any item in excess of carry-on baggage size or allowance requirements will be checked to your final destination and may be subject to applicable checked baggage fees.

Checked baggage
In general, United will accept up to two pieces of checked baggage with a maximum weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) per bag and a maximum combined linear measurement of 62 inches (157 cm) per bag in exchange for the applicable service fees set forth below. Additional checked bags or any bags that exceed these allowable weights and dimensions are subject to additional fees. Linear measurement of a bag is equal to the length + width + height of the bag added together. If your baggage needs require you to check additional baggage, or your baggage exceeds the listed size and weight

Assistive devices, including electric wheelchairs weighing more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms), will continue to be accepted at no charge.

How a bag is measured

A bag will be weighed and measured to ensure that it meets the dimensional requirements for shipping. Baggage is measured by length + width + height. The dimensions of each measurement are added together to compose the total number of linear inches/centimeters. The bag's thickest or widest part of the length, width and height will be measured.

Bag fees apply at any point where bags are checked. For a trip that includes one or more connections, bags will be checked to your final destination, and the fee for checking a bag from your origin to your destination will apply. Korean Airlines Flight lands - Bomb Threat Call

Korean Airlines Flight lands after bomb threat

Korean Airlines Boeing 777 from Vancouver to Seoul was diverted to a nearby Canadian military base after the airline's U.S. call center received a bomb threat.

www.powermiles.com

Authorities searched the aircraft early Wednesday and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said nothing suspicious was found.
Korean Airlines said in a statement that the call center received the threat about 25 minutes after take-off from Vancouver International Airport.

Officials said the aircraft with 149 passengers then turned around.
A Canadian spokeswoman for The North American Aerospace Defense Command, said two U.S. F-15 fighter jets from Portland, Oregon, escorted the plane to Canada's Comox air base on Vancouver Island, 113 miles outside Vancouver.
Flight passengers and crew stayed overnight in the area while officials did a detailed search of the plane's luggage.
Nothing suspicious had been found.
Korean Airlines flight out of Vancouver faced a similar threat Monday and the all-clear was given after a two hour search. He said Monday's threat was called in somewhere other than the airline's U.S. call center but he declined to say where.
Korean Air spokeswoman Penny Pfaelzer, based in Los Angeles, said that the caller warned that an explosive was on board the aircraft.
An airline spokeswoman in Korea said all the passengers and crew were safe and that the airline would decide on a new departure time after a safety inspection.

Travel the West cost all month long for one Price!

Read the Full story in the LA Times

Flat Rate for 1 Month of flights!

A team of brothers plans to launch a Santa Monica-based airline to serve executives and others who are willing to pay a monthly membership fee for unlimited travel up and down the California coast.

The concept is not new and has been fairly successful primarily with larger, commercial airlines.

Santa Monica-based Surf Air plans to begin accepting members Thursday to fly between Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey and Palo Alto starting in May.

The airline would charge members a monthly fee, starting at $790, for unlimited flights between the four destinations on small eight-passenger aircraft. The flights will take off on a schedule to be established later, based on the demand of members.

Surf Air is founded by Wade Eyerly, a former campaign aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney, and his brother, David, a former manager at Frontier Airlines.

The brothers attempted to launch a similar operation on the East Coast last year under the name PlaneRed but decided instead to relocate it to the West Coast after working with MuckerLab, a technology incubator in Los Angeles, according to a Surf Air spokeswoman.
